LE CENERI DI MILANO

Opens 21 September, through 30 November 2007

Galleria Emi Fontana is glad to present le ceneri di Milano - Luca Vitone fourth solo show and a new project for the gallery space.

The artwork of Luca Vitone focuses on the idea of the place, inviting us to re-cognize something we already know, defying the conventions of mutable, faded memory that characterize the present.
His work explores the way places are identified through cultural production: art, music, cuisine, political associations, ethnic minorities. Vitone bridges the gap between the sense of loss of place characteristic of the postmodern and the ways in which feelings of belonging arise in the intersection of personal and collective memory. He reconstructs and invents forgotten paths to reconstruct his own personal geography.

On the occasion of his new solo show at Galleria Emi Fontana Luca Vitone carries his own personal research on the monochrome further. This investigation started in 1988 with the work L’invisibile informa il visibile and continued in his saffron monochromes (2000), the work entitled Finestre (2004) and the canvases presented at the exhibition Io, Roma in 2005 and at the Sharjah Biennale in 2007. The artist manipulates organic elements such as wine or saffron powder, or those present in the atmosphere such as its pollution, dust or exhaust gasses and transforms them into a painting medium.
The present installation sees the space of the gallery entirely occupied by three large display cases. They contain the ashes of the city of Milan - the burning down of its urban waste into an extremely fine dust. This is the new medium used by Luca Vitone to map out the place. The essence of the work is shifted towards what in not visible through seductive surfaces which become the mark of a new portrait of the city.

Luca Vitone, born in 1964 in Genoa, lives and works in Milan.
