Mike Kelley, born in 1954 in Detroit, lives and works in Los Angeles.

Mike Kelley has been active since the late 1970s; his work has had a profound effect on the art of recent years. The references in Kelley's output are varied: the countercultures of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the mass psychology of pop culture, body art and feminism, American conceptual art, and the historical avantgardes. Kelley reconciles these elements through the construction of a personal poetic cosmology built on visual and linguistic analogies. In the presence of his works the viewer is transported into myriad physical and psychological spaces.

Lavora dalla fine degli anni settanta e da qui ad allora si è andata costituendo la sua estetica che ha influenzato in maniera irreversibile l'arte di questi anni.
I riferimenti da cui Kelley è partito sono alquanto eterogenei: il movimento punk della fine degli anni settanta, le sollecitazioni della cultura e soprattutto della psicologia di massa, la body art e l'arte femminista, il concettualismo americano e le avanguardie storiche. Kelley ha la grande abilità di riconciliare questi elementi nelle sue personali cosmogonie, attraverso un processo linguistico, che procedendo per analogie e stratificazioni, va a costiture il suo universo poetico. Lo spettatore davanti alle sue opere si sente trasportato in un differente spazio fisico e psicologico.
