Michael Smith was born in Chicago, 1951. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and Austin, Texas.

He started his career in the 70’s, exploring different media such as visual art, television, performance. The performative feature present in all his production strongly influenced the work of many artists of his same generation.

His work has been shown in Institutions and Museums in USA and in Europe, like Documenta VIII, Kassel, Whitney Museum, MOMA and The New Museum in New York, MOCA, Los Angeles, Le Magasin Grenoble.

Istituzioni e musei sia negli Stati Uniti che in Europa hanno esposto il suo lavoro, tra i quali il Whitney Museum, il MOMA e il New Museum di New York, il MOCA di Los Angeles, Documenta VIII, Kassel. Le Magasin di Grenoble nel 2000 ha ospitato una sua retrospettiva e ha pubblicato un catalogo.
