Willie Doherty
ARTIST
Willie Doherty, born in 1959 in Derry N. Ireland, where he lives and works.

Doherty's work addresses the descriptive limitations of the photographic medium that allows for narrative projection. His photographic investigations reflect our innate desire to see beyond the photographic frame to that which lies outside its visual field. Diherty utilizes the languages of documentary film, surveillance videos and photojournalism, but questions the assumed veracity of those practices. His photographs and video projections often address the political and psychological conflicts that plagueNorthern Ireland, a territory particularly relevant to his study of the emotionally manipulative nature of journalistic imagery.

The work of Willie Doherty is internationally known. In recent years he has participated in prestigious exhibitions at: Kunsthalle Bern; Centre Pompidou, Parigi; ARC, Parigi; X Sydney Biennial (1996); IAC Villeurbanne; PS1, New York; Magasin, Grenoble (1997); Tate Gallery, Liverpool; Sammlung Goez, Monaco; Moderna Museet, Stoccolma (1998); Carnegie International, Pittsburgh; Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1999); IMMA, Dublino; XXV Sao Paulo Biennial (2002); De Appel, Amsterdam; 8th Istanbul Biennial (2003); Kunstverein Hamburg; 52 Biennale di Venezia (2007); Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Museion, Bolzano (2008).
