Adrian Piper
ARTIST
Adrian Piper, born in 1948 in New York, lives and works in Wellesley, Massachussets.

Adrian Piper is an important figure in the history of conceptual and performance art. Her work addresses racial, social and sexual stereotypes, utilizing a variety of artistic languages and media. Artistic and philosophical research is masterfully intertwined with autobiographical elements in her work and she nimbly shifts between the political and private spheres. Her practice extends beyond the limitations of the contemporary art system to embrace philosophical research. However, Piper's work has strong emotional impact in addition to its philosophical and social depth.

From the late 1960s her works are shown and collected by the world's most important museums, including MOMA, New York (1988); Musée d'Art Modern, Paris (1990); Whitney Museum, New York (1995); New Museum, New York (2000); MAMCO, Geneva (2001); Documenta XI (2002), Generali Foundation of Vienna (2003, retrospective traveling to the the Musée d'Art Contemporaine Villeurbanne of Lyon and MACBA Barcelona); Tate Liverpool; Castello di Rivoli,Torino (2005); Austrian Cultural Forum, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles (2007).
