Sam Durant
ARTIST
Sam Durant, born in 1961 in Seattle, lives and works in Los Angeles.

The work of sam Durant investigates utopia and its failure in relation to protest and countercultures movements in American political history. Through the use of a great variety of media, his work rather then succumbing to a fascination with the original sources generates an aestethic in which elements of high and low culture coexist. Composing his own language, he brings out the contradictions of modernism reassembling them in a dissonant polyphny of forms.

His work has been shown at prestigious private and public institutions, including: Salzburger Kunstverein (1999); MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles (2000); MAMCO, Geneva; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, (2001); Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut, MOCA Los Angeles(2002); Kunstverein Düsseldorf, Germany; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Secession, Wien (2003); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2004); CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco; Wrong Gallery, New York (2005); Massachusetts College of Art, Boston; Palazzo delle Papesse, Siena; Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2006); Deste Foundation, Centre for the Contemporary Art, Athens; 8th Panama Biennial (2007); Stichting Den Haag Sculpture, The Hague; Museion, Bolzano (2008).
